Localisation is essential to transform South Africa’s automotive sector and ensure the industry remains competitive. The South African Automotive Masterplan (SAAM) sets targets in this respect, aiming to raise local content in South African assembled vehicles to 60% by 2035. Several NAACAM members have continued to drive localisation and, in doing so, contribute to the sector’s competitiveness.
NAACAM member KLT Automotive and Tubular, South Africa, a subsidiary of KLT Group, recently announced a production milestone; the manufacturer has produced the 800 000th Ford Ranger chassis at its Hammanskraal plant, South Africa.
Renai Moothilal, Executive Director of the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM), congratulated KLT Automotive on this achievement. He noted that “the KLT Automotive story in South Africa is a perfect example of how global companies are responding to the policy constructs of the SA Automotive Masterplan 2035 and wishes KLT well in gaining more local production opportunities”.
