July was challenging for South Africa, especially in the KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng provinces. The looting and violence witnessed has been detrimental for the tyre sector.
The SATMC (South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference), representing the four local tyre manufacturers Bridgestone South Africa (Pty) Ltd, Continental Tyre SA, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company SA and Sumitomo Rubber South Africa (Pty) Ltd. strongly condemns the looting and vandalism witnessed last week across the country. The acts have had a damaging impact for the tyre sector.
Nduduzo Chala, Managing Executive, SATMC, said: “As the tyre sector value chain, let us stand together and fight the criminality witnessed. The tyres looted are already being sold on the streets and on social media platforms. We urge consumers not to support this and for tyre fitment centres to not fit loose tyres without valid proof of purchase. Together we can stop the cycle of criminality.”
