Name: Sumeshni Govender
Studying: Mechanical Engineering
Sumeshni chose to study Mechanical Engineering due to its versatility – it has a mixture of all engineering attributes which allows you to enter a variety of different sectors. Sumeshni has always dreamed of helping to make people’s lives easier and designing machines that can do that, thus her dream job is to become a mechanical engineer designer. The choice to study Mechanical Engineering was also driven by research, as Sumeshni identified that the profession offered a wide range of opportunities and particularly for women given the drive for greater gender equality in the workplace.
Having undertaken a technical qualification, Sumeshni offers some advice to young women similarly wanting to pursue a technical qualification. She says, “don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know, you learn everything as it comes. If you have a dream, make it a reality by working harder than everyone else, and do not let anyone tell you ‘you’re just a woman, you won’t be able to do it,’ always prove them wrong. Your biggest competition is yourself. Speak up when you do not understand something and communicate clearly. Don’t be afraid to voice your opinions and always believe in yourself.” #NAACAMProud #WeAreNAACAM #TheFutureIsFemale #WomenInEngineering
