Isondo Precious Metals (IPM) is setting up Africa’s first fuel cell component manufacturing factory that will manufacture Platinum Group Metal (PGM) based Membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) and catalysts for electrolysers (to produce hydrogen) and fuel cells (converts hydrogen into electricity). These components will be used in the global and local automotive, aeromotive, stationary power and hydrogen generation technology supply chains.
IPM’s state of the art new facility currently under construction at the OR Tambo special economic zone will be ready for operation by July 2023.
Isondo is also deploying hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) and more than 300 fuel cell driven buses, trucks and cars using its exclusive access to 7 tons of hydrogen daily in the Johannesburg area. This hydrogen can be deployed at the equivalent total cost of ownership of diesel buses currently, the only project able to achieve this feat in South Africa.
