#NAACAMProud: NAACAM member Maxion Wheels South Africa marked a major milestone in sustainability with the launch of its innovative renewable energy project at its Ekurhuleni facility on Earth Day (22 April 2025). Led by Terra Firma, the initiative will roll out in two phases: the first featuring a 2.4MWhp ground-mounted and carport solar installation, and the second adding a 1.5MWp rooftop solar system.
The project will supply 35% of the facility’s annual energy needs and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 6,770t CO2e per annum. Maxion Wheels, the world’s largest wheel producer with 50 million wheels manufactured annually, operates in 14 countries and supplies major automakers such as Toyota and BMW from its Ekurhuleni facility. The project aligns with Maxion’s Roadmap Zero strategy, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Emphasizing the value of the project, Maxion Wheels Managing Director, Milos Despotovic noted that the project will boost energy security and deliver operational cost savings, while also advancing Maxion Wheels’ global sustainability objectives.
This project is in line with rising adoption of renewable energy in the automotive sector, as highlighted by Terra Firma CEO, Grant Berndsen, who also expressed pride in supporting Maxion Wheels’ long-term sustainability vision.
NAACAM commends the leadership of Maxion Wheels and the support of Terra Firma for taking this significant step in advancing not only Maxion Wheel’s decarbonization, but equally setting an example for the domestic component sector’s green transition. #WeAreNAACAM
