| #WeAreNAACAM: NAACAM through its CEO Renai Moothilal recently participated in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), held in Yokohama from 20–22 August 2025, as part of a South African business delegation led by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Themed “Co-Create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” the summit spotlighted deepening collaboration in sectors such as automotive and components manufacturing, energy, and mobility innovation. Japan remains one of South Africa’s key economic partners and a significant source of foreign investment and technology partnership. Japanese auto component suppliers with presence in SA include Ogihara, Toyoda Gosei, Toyota Boshoku, Advics, Denso and Yazaki. In 2024, South Africa exported a diverse range of components to Japan, amounting to R704.6 million. Included in these exports were engine parts, brake parts, tyres and springs. Speaking at the South Africa – Japan Business Forum, President Ramaphosa emphasised the potential to strengthen collaboration in strategic sectors such as automotive components, battery minerals, renewable energy, and hydrogen technologies, all essential for building resilient, future-ready supply chains. While at TICAD, Renai had the opportunity to engage with leaders from key Japanese automotive and trading companies including Suzuki, CFAO and Toyota Tsusho, as well as South African PGM company, Valterra Platinum, to explore future-focused collaboration in hydrogen and multi-pathway automotive technologies in the NEV context. This aligns with South Africa’s broader agenda to promote investment in value-added mobility solutions, green hydrogen, and industrial transition, while advancing clean energy and local economic growth.
