| On 24 July, NAACAM CEO Renai Moothilal presented on the state and challenges of South Africa’s automotive component sector at the COSATU Green Industrialisation National Policy Workshop, contributing to discussions on the future of South Africa’s manufacturing sector and the policy interventions required to drive sustainable industrial growth. Renai highlighted that the component sector offers the greatest employment opportunity within the automotive manufacturing value chain, but remains below its potential scale. Realising opportunities across critical minerals, legacy-ICE and NEV components, and regional and aftermarket markets – underpinned by deeper localisation – is what will unlock production growth and quality employment opportunities. “Two things drive employment growth in this sector: more vehicles produced locally, and more of what goes into them sourced locally. Get those right, and you widen the value chain and create jobs at every tier of the supply chain.” – Renai Moothilal, CEO, NAACAM.
