Solar Project Powering Gauteng Facility For World’s Leading Wheel Manufacturer Is Now Live

#NAACAMProud: NAACAM congratulates member, Maxion Wheels South Africa, on the successful launch of its 2.9 MWp solar project at its Johannesburg manufacturing facility. Announced during the company’s 60th anniversary celebrations, this milestone demonstrates how leading automotive component manufacturers are embracing innovation to drive both competitiveness and sustainability.

The installation, developed in partnership with Terra Firma, will provide 20% of the plant’s annual energy needs, cutting reliance on the national grid while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 5,100 tonnes per year. With electricity being one of the largest input costs for energy-intensive processes like aluminium wheel production, this step not only enhances resilience against tariff hikes but also strengthens South Africa’s global competitiveness in advanced manufacturing.

Projects like these highlight the sector’s strong commitment to localisation, building industrial resilience, and driving decarbonisation, in step with global trends and South Africa’s climate ambitions. NAACAM is proud to see members such as Maxion Wheels leading the charge.  Read the full release below.
