Today, NAACAM presented to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition a critical update on the state of the South African automotive component sector and the implementation of SAAM35.
While the auto industry remains a cornerstone of our economy, the sector, in particular component manufacturing is facing headwinds. NAACAM CEO, Renai Moothilal, highlighted that the while component manufacturers delivered a number of highlights lined to the dtic industrial policy objectives, the sector is facing significant deindustrialisation risks, with Masterplan targets across all key KPI’s falling short of expectations.
Accompanied by NAACAM President, Ugo Frigerio, COO Nduduzo Chala (Cert.Dir.)(MBA) and Head of Policy & Regulatory Affairs Beth Dealtry, NAACAM outlined a clear path forward through several high-impact policy recommendations designed to catalyze growth, restoring the quality of the domestic market, production volumes and grow local content and creating new employment opportunities.
Decisive intervention is needed to prevent further decline and to ensure the auto industry, through component production, acts as a catalyst for South Africa’s re-industrialisation.
NAACAM remains committed to working with all stakeholders to unlock the unrealised scale of the component sector and secure a competitive future for SA manufacturing.
